Lost Highway, Chantal Stoman
Presented by Bonjour India Festival, organised by Alliance Française de Bombay and Studio X, in collaboration with ICCR.
“Along the Highway, the night is passing by. Insomniac and fragile. Made invisible by the metal shell and the speed of my vehicle, I invite myself where I have not been invited. Protected by the discretion of the night… I dine at their table, I watch their TV, I sleep in their bed.”
With Chantal Stoman’s lightboxes, the great cities become illuminated. Tokyo, Cairo, São Paulo, Hong Kong and Kolkata’s life is revealed at the pace of the flyovers that cross over them. Through the surface of the back-illuminated box, Chantal Stoman opens a dialogue in the dead of night to capture traces of life. Her black and white contact-sheets, which collate photographs taken along the road, become multitudes of illuminated windows and microscopic worlds.
